AFSC has frequently provided leadership in addressing global peace issues as they emerged and is currently providing leadership to oppose war on Iraq and the establishment of a permanent war society. In addition KC AFSC addresses a range of issues through weekly "coffeehouse" discussions of emerging issues.

PEACE & JUSTICE TEACH-INS

**October 6: Bobby Seale at UMKC's Tent City- speaking at 6:30 in the arts quad (between the buildings bounded by Holmes, Rockhill, 51st, and 52nd Streets.)


**October 13: Outside the Ark -- Ellen O’Grady. at UMKC, Flarsheim Hall, 5110 Rockhill Rd., room 260. Ellen is an artist and activist from North Carolina who spent six years living and working in Palestine and Israel. She combines paint and words to tell the stories of individual Palestinians living in the West Bank. Their stories and Ellen’s own story are linked through remembering of the Biblical flood story. *See below for more details.

October 20: Why I want to do civil disobedience at SOA/WHISC: Crossing the lline into deeper solidarity -- Charles Carney.

There are several people traveling from KC to the School of the Americas in Georgia this November. Charles will share his reasons for going, and invite others to join him.

October 27:.Poetry evening. Bring poetry to share -- your own or some you particularly like and/or find inspiring.

Ellen O'Grady is an artist and social justice activist in Durham, North Carolina. She majored in Theology in college and afterwards spent six years living in Palestine and Israel. Ellen has returned several times since to work with a variety of grassroots activist groups. An extensive and growing list of weblinks can be found here.
Her work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout the state and country. Ellen's volunteer work in Palestine led to several commisioned public projects. Much of her work draws from her time in Palestine and Israel and reflects on the present conflict revealing the human faces behind the ongoing tragedy. For a complete list, see below.
Ellen is currently preparing a nation-wide tour to promote her new book, Outside the Ark. It is the culmination of her painting series of the same name whose inspiration came from her time living and working in the West Bank. For more information on the series, click here. Outside the Ark tells the stories of individual Palestinians living in the West Bank. It links these stories and her own story through a remembering of the Biblical flood story. The work is exhibited in the form of a slide-show/storytelling performance, in paintings exhibitions, and in a book. It has been reaching people at a variety of venues, including art galleries, public libraries, colleges, high schools and places of worship. Ellen has been exhibited in many juried shows.

September 8: Engage, Transform, Resolve, Manage: What Helps in Conflict – Don Ivens. Do practitioners who wade into conflict situations really know what they are doing. Donill talk about possibilities and expectations for helping conflict be an opportunity for growth. Don is a staff member at the Center in Independence.

September 15: Pro-Vote is more than election work -- Lindsay Walker. Missouri Progressive Vote Coalition is a coalition of labor and community groups that works on protecting Social Security, issues around school vouchers and health care. Lindsay, who works with Pro-Vote and is on the local program committee of AFSC, will speak about issues likely to be hot in this year’s Missouri legislature.

September 22: Why are people fighting in the Sudan? -- Malang Mabior & Thuc Juag came to the United States 5 years ago from the Sudan. They will talk about the causes and origins of the conflict there.

September 29: Dominican Republic -- Steve Hall & Bev Chapman. (details later)
