August 16: Current Events in Uganda – Alfred Kisubi. A former Kansas City resident and native Ugandan, Alfred is currently a professor at U. Wisconsin Oshkosh. He recently took a group of students to Uganda. He will bring us up to date on events in Uganda, including the 20-year insurgency in the north and its effect on children. Since Uganda is part of the "coalition of the willing," there is little news about this conflict in US media.

August 23: The Mideast Crisis -- Matt Quinn & Cindy Ross. The Hezbollah-Israeli crisis and Israeli-Palestinian conflict have resulted in hundreds of deaths. What are the options to influence long-term resolutions to these conflicts? The U.S. government is a gatekeeper, and American citizens have a crucial place in pressing for peace in the Mideast, says Matt Quinn, who will also speak about his work with the Sabeel Conference. Sabeel is an ecumenical grassroots liberation theology movement among Palestinian Christians. Matt is a founding member of Citizens for Justice in the Middle East. Cindy Ross is the daughter of a Lebanese woman and Lee's Summit resident. She has a large number of family members in Lebanon, including in the mainly Christian town of Marjeyoun. Marjeyoun was in the news on Friday, August 11, when a humanitarian convoy fleeing the city was attacked by the Israeli military. Cindy will share first-hand accounts of this attack.
