AFSC has frequently provided leadership in addressing global peace issues as they emerged and is currently providing leadership to oppose war on Iraq and the establishment of a permanent war society. In addition KC AFSC addresses a range of issues through weekly "coffeehouse" discussions of emerging issues.

January 3: Columbus, Colonialism, and Creole: History, Myth, & Hope in Haiti – Matt Kaiser. A presentation exploring how Haiti became the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, reasons first-world nations have kept it that way, and how the grassroots development model of an organization called the Lambi Fund of Haiti is affecting positive change in Haiti. Matt is a Mennonite Voluntary Service worker representing the "Lambi Fund for Haiti," an organization that promotes economic justice, democracy, and sustainable development in Haiti.

January 10: OutlawOutlawed: Extraordinary Rendition, Torture and Disappearances in the "War on Terror" – Kara Erickson . This documentary video tells the stories of Khaled El-Masri and Binyam Mohamed, two men who have survived extraordinary rendition, secret detention, and torture by the U.S. government working with various other governments worldwide. "Outlawed" features relevant commentary from Louise Arbour, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, U.S. President George W. Bush, Michael Scheuer, the chief architect of the rendition program and former head of the Osama Bin Laden unit at the CIA, and Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. Secretary of State.. "Outlawed," produced by WITNESS and AI USA in association with 12 other groups worldwide, places the post-9/11 phenomenon of renditions and the "war on terror" in a human rights context and calls for action end these human rights abuses. Kara is active with Amnesty.

January 17: SOA – Avila students. Students and Staff from Avila University recently traveled to the School of Americas at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia to participate in the annual rally to raise awareness and support to close the school that has been linked to torture and countless deaths in Latin America over the last quarter century. The students, who are mostly neophytes to the peace movement, will talk about their experience there and how their worldview was influenced by what they saw and learned

January 24: Justice, peace and freedom: Live Music -- Bob & Diana Suckiel. Bob & Diana, among the founders of the old Fool killer, will sing songs about the civil war to iraq--eugene v debs to bush--in spoken word and song -- spirituals, blues, rags, folk songs, country, western, labour, old time music and a little bit more. Bob and Diana have appeared on pbs movie "amazing grace music in america" cica 1976--winnepeg canada music fest.--long steel rails music fest, in ely nevada--vancouver folk fest with utah phillips---champlain folk music festival---peoples poetry gathering, in new york city--hosted music shows on kcur and kkfi for 15 years--blue collar workers, singers, historians, lovers and rabbles rousers.
